Today we want to look at whether too much vitamin D can lead to sleep disorders and show you how you can find the golden mean.
To achieve a better quality of sleep, you should make sure you eat a balanced diet.
In the last few articles, we have already looked at the various causes and symptoms of sleep disorders. We have also looked at various vitamins and nutrients that are relevant for your body and for a good night’s sleep. Today we want to focus on vitamins, and vitamin D in particular, and explore with you how much the human body needs and what effects an overdose can have. You won’t get a better quality of sleep by taking too many vitamins, but by eating a balanced diet and getting just the right amount of vitamins and nutrients.
Can I get sleep problems from too much vitamin D?
Unfortunately, we have to answer yes to this question. Because too many vitamins can be just as harmful to the human body as too few can be (in some cases even more harmful). It is therefore of even greater relevance that you only give your body the substances it needs and only in the quantities it needs. After all, fatigue can be caused not only by a lack of vitamin D, but also by an overdose. But don’t worry, you can’t give your body too much vitamin D naturally. This means that it is not possible for you to accidentally obtain too much of the beloved D vitamin through sunlight, for example. Nor will you suffer from an overdose of vitamin D through your diet. This only occurs if you take additional supplements (the “wrong” ones or those that are unsuitable for you).
What causes sleep disorders due to too much vitamin D? As already mentioned, you cannot suffer from an overdose due to your diet or a lot of sunlight. However, the situation is different with high-dose food supplements, which contain a huge amount of vitamin D. If you simply resort to any supplements without knowing exactly what your body needs and, in the worst case, overdose on them (because you probably didn’t know any better), this can have fatal consequences. For example, you may eat a lot of foods with a high vitamin D content and try out a new vitamin D tablet at the same time, giving your body far too much of the vitamin D it loves. The result could be an overdose. However, this is exactly what needs to be avoided in order not to suffer from sleep disorders due to too much vitamin D.
What consequences can a lack of sleep due to vitamin D overdose have?
We would like to give you a brief example: If you consume more than 100 micrograms of vitamin D per day, kidney stones could be one of the negative consequences. But why is this the case? Isn’t vitamin D simply broken down by my body? Unfortunately, the answer is no. This is because the fat-soluble vitamin D cannot simply be excreted or broken down by the human body. On the contrary – it is stored in your fat and muscle tissue. This is why an excessive intake of vitamin D can cause both acute and long-term, even chronic problems in the body. These can manifest themselves differently from person to person. A sudden, enormously increased intake of vitamin D can have a particularly acute and dangerous effect. In the worst case scenario, the body suffers intoxication.
If you consume too much vitamin D over a longer period of time, this can lead to vitamin D intoxication. How much vitamin D should I take every day? It is recommended that children over the age of ten and adults only consume up to 100 micrograms a day. If you have a child who is younger, you can use the following guideline as a guide (although it is still best to consult a doctor to get exact figures): 50 micrograms per day is appropriate for children under the age of ten.
What are the symptoms of a vitamin D overdose?
Now we would like to look together with you at what symptoms such an increased intake can have. Because too much vitamin D doesn’t just lead to sleep disorders. There are several other negative effects of an overdose. You should not underestimate these and therefore only use supplements with caution if you do not know exactly what they contain and how much your body needs. An overdose of vitamin D not only means that you have too much vitamin D in your body, but also that your body absorbs too much calcium from your food. This is due to the excess vitamin D. Because too much of it means that the body can also suffer from an increased calcium level in the blood. This condition is called hypercalcemia. Other serious consequences of too much vitamin D, in addition to sleep disorders, include nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, headaches and nervousness.
If you take in too much vitamin D, you may also suffer from extreme thirst, which is called polydipsia. You may also experience frequent headaches, weakness and difficulty paying attention. The condition polyuria is also a consequence of an overdose of vitamin D. This refers to the abnormally frequent need to urinate. Other unpleasant consequences of an overdose of vitamin D are kidney stones and kidney damage, which can even lead to kidney failure. It is therefore very important that you do not take any supplements without knowing what they contain, but that you first find out which nutrients and vitamins your body needs and in what quantities. You can read up on this in our store and take a personal test with a hair sample at home. This will show you exactly which nutrients your body needs and how much of them it requires.
Improve your own sleep quality with riboflavin

We have now taken a close look at vitamin D. But vitamin B is also relevant when it comes to your own sleep quality. Riboflavin refers to the water-soluble vitamin B2, which you should take in daily to make it easier for your body to carry out vital processes. Vitamin B2 is said to be relevant for maintaining your blood cells, boosting energy, reducing inflammation and discomfort and ensuring that your metabolism, digestive system and immune system function well. Vitamin B2 is also a real helper when it comes to sleep. Vitamin B2 also helps you fight free radicals, as well as keeping your skin and eyes healthy.
What happens if I take in too little vitamin B2? Can sleep disorders occur due to a vitamin B2 deficiency? The most common symptoms that occur when a person suffers from vitamin B2 deficiency are initially dry lips, dark circles under the eyes, cracked nails, brittle and greasy hair as well as chronic fatigue, headaches, mood swings and depression. Long-term vitamin B2 malnutrition can also result in dizziness, poor digestion, nerve damage and sleep disorders. So that you can enjoy a restful and restorative sleep, you should therefore make sure that you provide your body with all the relevant vitamins it needs. However, you should also be careful not to overdose. This is because too much vitamin D or vitamin B can also cause sleep disorders in humans.
How can I avoid sleep disorders caused by taking too many vitamins?
As there are a large number of different supplements on the market, it is clear that you are probably a little confused and don’t know exactly how much of which vitamin you need. And that’s exactly what we want to help you with! In our store you will find a personal test that you can send to us with a hair sample. Our colleagues in the laboratory will then analyze your hair sample to find out which vitamins your body may be lacking or which substances you may be intolerant to. Within a few days, you will receive a laboratory report that tells you exactly which vitamins your body needs. Based on this result, our colleagues in the laboratory can produce personalized nutritional supplements for you.
These supplements are then precisely tailored to your body and your body’s needs. However, this also means that you should not simply share them with your family or friends, as the food supplements are explicitly designed for your body.
