Does too much vitamin D cause sleep disturbances?

Today we want to look at whether too much vitamin D can cause sleep disturbances and show you how to find the golden mean.

Because to achieve better sleep quality, you should pay attention to a balanced diet.

In recent articles, we have already dealt with the various causes and symptoms of sleep disorders. We also looked at different vitamins and nutrients that are relevant for your body as well as for good sleep. Today, we want to focus on vitamins, especially vitamin D, and explore together how much the human body needs and what effects an overdose can have. You won’t achieve better sleep quality by taking too many vitamins, but only if you enjoy a balanced diet and get exactly the right amount of vitamins and nutrients.

Can I get sleep problems from too much vitamin D?

Unfortunately, we have to answer yes to this question. Because too many vitamins can be just as harmful to the human body as too few (in some cases even more harmful). Therefore, it is even more important that you only give your body the substances it needs, and only in the amounts it requires. After all, fatigue can be caused not only by a lack of vitamin D but also by an overdose. But don’t worry, you cannot naturally give your body too much vitamin D. This means it is not possible to accidentally get too much of the beloved vitamin D from sunlight, for example. Nor will you suffer from an overdose of vitamin D through your diet. This only happens through the additional intake of (the “wrong” or unsuitable for you) supplements.

What causes can sleep disorders from too much vitamin D have? As already mentioned, you cannot suffer from an overdose through diet or a lot of sunlight. However, it is different with high-dose supplements that contain a huge amount of vitamin D. If you—without knowing your body exactly—simply rely on some supplements and in the worst case even overdose (because you probably didn’t know better), this can have fatal consequences. For example, you might eat many foods high in vitamin D and at the same time want to try a new vitamin tablet, thereby giving your body way too much of the beloved vitamin D. The result could be an overdose. This is exactly what you should avoid to prevent sleep disorders caused by too much vitamin D.

What consequences can lack of sleep due to vitamin D overdose have?

We want to give you a brief example: If you take more than 100 micrograms of vitamin D per day, kidney stones could be one of the negative consequences. But why is that? Doesn’t my body just break down vitamin D? Unfortunately, the answer is no. Because the fat-soluble vitamin D cannot simply be excreted or broken down by the human body. On the contrary—it is stored in your fat and muscle tissue. Therefore, a too high intake of vitamin D can cause both acute and long-term, even chronic problems in the body. These can manifest differently from person to person. A particularly acute and dangerous effect can be a sudden, enormously increased intake of vitamin D. In the worst case, the body suffers poisoning.

If you take too much vitamin D over a longer period, this can lead to vitamin D intoxication. How much vitamin D should I take daily? It is recommended that children from ten years old and adults take only up to 100 micrograms per day. If you have a child younger than that, you can follow this guideline (but ideally consult a doctor to get exact numbers): 50 micrograms per day are appropriate for children under ten years old.

What are the symptoms of a vitamin D overdose?

Now we want to look together with you at what symptoms such an increased intake can have. Because too much vitamin D does not only lead to sleep disorders. There are many other negative effects of an overdose. You should not underestimate these and therefore only handle supplements carefully if you do not know exactly what they contain and how much your body needs. A vitamin D overdose means not only that you have too much vitamin D in your body but also that your body absorbs too much calcium from your food. This is exactly due to the excess vitamin D. Because too much of it means the body can also suffer from an elevated calcium level in the blood. This condition is called hypercalcemia. Other serious consequences of too much vitamin D, which can occur alongside sleep disorders, include nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, headaches, and nervousness.

It could also be that if you take too much vitamin D, you suffer from extreme thirst, which is called polydipsia. Additionally, you might frequently get headaches and suffer from weakness and difficulty concentrating. The condition polyuria is also a consequence of vitamin D overdose. This means abnormally frequent urination. Other unpleasant consequences of a vitamin D overdose can be kidney stones and kidney damage, which can even lead to kidney failure. Therefore, it is very important that you do not unknowingly rely on any supplements but first inform yourself about which nutrients and vitamins your body needs and in what amounts. You can read about this in our shop and do a personal test with a hair sample at home. This will show you exactly which nutrients your body needs and how much of them.

Improve your own sleep quality with riboflavin

Avoid sleep disturbances from too much vitamin D

We have now taken an extensive look at vitamin D. But vitamin B is also relevant when it comes to your own sleep quality. Riboflavin means the water-soluble vitamin B2, which you should take daily to support your body’s vital processes. Vitamin B2 is said to be important for maintaining your blood cells, increasing energy, reducing inflammation and discomfort, and ensuring that your metabolism, digestive system, and immune system function well. Even when it comes to your own sleep, vitamin B2 is a true helper. Because vitamin B2 also helps fight free radicals, as well as supports the health of your skin and eyes.

What happens if I take too little vitamin B2? Can sleep disorders occur due to a vitamin B2 deficiency? The most common symptoms that occur when a person suffers from vitamin B2 deficiency are initially dry lips, dark circles under the eyes, cracked nails, brittle and oily hair, as well as chronic fatigue, headaches, mood swings, and depression. With prolonged vitamin B2 malnutrition, dizziness, poor digestion, nerve damage, and also sleep disorders can result. To enjoy restful and extensive sleep, you should therefore make sure to provide your body with all the relevant vitamins it needs. But you should also be careful not to overdose. Because sleep disorders can also occur in people due to too much vitamin D or vitamin B.

How do I avoid sleep disorders caused by too many vitamins?

Since there is a wide variety of different supplements on the market, it is clear that you are probably a bit overwhelmed and don’t know exactly how much of which vitamin you need. And this is exactly where we want to help you! In our shop, you will find a personal test that you can send to us with a hair sample. Our colleagues in the lab then analyze your hair sample to find out which vitamins your body might be lacking or which substances you might react intolerantly to. Within a few days, you will receive a lab report that tells you exactly which vitamins your body needs. Based on this result, our colleagues in the lab can produce personalized supplements for you.

These supplements are then precisely tailored to your body and your body’s needs. However, this also means that you should not simply share them with your family or friends, as the supplements are explicitly designed for your body.
