Yeast Intolerance – What You Need to Know!

Do you often have stomach pain or digestive problems? Many people suffer from an intolerance to certain foods.

Fatigue, lack of energy, and digestive problems could be clear signs of a yeast intolerance. It is found in many foods. It is especially present in bread and sweet baked goods, but also in sauces and sweets. Even beer and wine contain yeast. What are the symptoms of a yeast intolerance?

Everyone reacts differently to an intolerance. However, an intolerance usually has a strong impact on quality of life. Most affected individuals mainly suffer from problems in the digestive tract.

Bloating, digestive disorders, and stomach cramps are often common. Many people also suffer from bad breath, fatigue, and mood swings. Concentration difficulties, irritability, headaches, and skin reactions (e.g., eczema) can also indicate an intolerance.

Difference between a yeast allergy and an intolerance

With an allergy, the immune system is affected as soon as you ingest the allergenic substance. Your body recognizes a normally harmless foreign substance as an allergen and accordingly produces antibodies.

How can a yeast intolerance be tested?

Does yeast contain histamine?

Yeast basically does not contain histamine. However, it is possible that histamine is produced during the manufacturing of certain foods to which yeast is added. Scientists are still very divided on the effects of yeast regarding people who suffer from histamine intolerance.

However, it is different with yeast extract. Yeast extract is produced by breaking down killed yeast cells. This process can release high amounts of histamine. 

People who suffer from histamine intolerance should therefore avoid consuming yeast extract. The extract can trigger strong symptoms and harm the body.  

What to do in case of a yeast intolerance?

A yeast intolerance can be well managed by avoiding yeast consumption for a certain period. Give your body the chance to recover from the intolerance. Only then can the symptoms completely disappear and your body can regenerate.

Completely avoiding yeast is not easy because it means you have to remove many foods from your diet that are normally taken for granted by most people.

This includes all kinds of bread, rolls, and other baked goods. Alcoholic beverages like wine and beer contain yeast and should therefore also not be consumed. Vinegar, soy sauces, fermented products, or ready-made sauces can also be problematic.

Therefore, pay close attention to the ingredient list when shopping. Yeast is often included in processed products, even if you wouldn’t expect it.

What are the alternatives to yeast?

A yeast-free diet is not easy, but definitely possible. There are many yeast-free foods you can use as alternatives. These include:

  • Buckwheat, millet, quinoa

  • Rice cakes

  • any kind of vegetables

  • Meat and fish

  • Eggs

As a yeast substitute for doughs, for example, baking powder, baking soda (in combination with an acid like lemon juice or vinegar) as well as homemade yeast water (made from sugar, water, and dates) are suitable. These alternatives work as leavening agents, though with a slightly different taste and baking method.

Basically: if the food has not been processed, you can usually eat it without any problems. Vegetables and fruits naturally contain no yeast and can therefore be eaten safely even with a yeast intolerance.

Even if the diagnosis of a yeast intolerance is initially a shock for you – don’t let it limit you. There are many creative ways to prepare delicious yeast-free dishes.
